Competitive Analysis:

AI Assistants in Legal Tech (2025)

Introduction

The world of AI is moving pretty fast. It feels like every month, there's a new product on the scene.

Paradigm, a legal tech company in the billing and case management space, was looking to integrate AI into its suite of legal tech products. I was asked to perform a competitive analysis.

At the time, Paradigm had not yet released AI related features and wanted information regarding AI assistants and search capability.

I identified and analyzed 3 top competitors advertising AI assistant/searching features.

Goals

Identify what competitors do well, and what gaps Paradigm could fill in the market.

Detect patterns across companies and features, to discern what customer expectations may be, regarding functionality.

Provide detailed screenshots and summaries of the AI features from all competitors.

Challenges

None of the competitors offered a free trial, so most of this research was done via articles, product knowledge bases, and analyzing demo videos online.

A harvey ball matrix and comparison table was created, to quickly communicate differences in these competitors at a glance.

I created a file in Figjam to consolidate all information. The entire Paradigm product team was given access to the competitive analysis and I presented my findings to the team.

Conclusion

All 3 competitors use ChatGPT style AI interfaces, allowing users to type questions or prompts.

Common use cases include summarizing documents, checking for upcoming case events, and finding open cases assigned to specific individuals. Users can ask questions like, "What's the status of this case?"

The main differences lie in scope and permission controls:

  • Clio: Broad access across the entire firm’s account, including billing. No user-level restrictions.

  • Smokeball: Limited to one case at a time. Users navigate to a case to use AI, and access can be enabled or disabled per user.

  • CoCounsel (Thomson Reuters): Limited to 8 predefined AI skills (e.g., summarization, drafting). Granular permission controls per user and skill.

Next Steps

Paradigm is well-positioned to move forward with their first AI feature. Instead of a traditional search redesign, they're now exploring a ChatGPT-style interface for more intuitive information retrieval.

Upcoming discussions will focus on technical feasibility, user permissions, and data privacy considerations.
